Built-in Bookshelves in The Hale
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on built-in bookshelves in The Hale starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- A home library or study
- A bare wall above a doorway
- Shelves that suit a period room

Built-in bookshelves in The Hale
Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We work across London, including The Hale. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are bowing shelves in an old bookcase and a room lined with books.
Around The Hale, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.

How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Vans bringing furniture to The Hale fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

How it is made
Birch plywood
Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces that take a painted finish evenly. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.
Honest limits
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Decorating the rest of the room
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it

- Hand-painted finish
What affects the price in The Hale
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Helping us understand the room
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in The Hale
Do you cover homes near Mill Hill Broadway station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in The Hale?
Yes. The Hale is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that is often left bare.
Why bespoke in The Hale?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, so they can match the walls or stand out. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
