Broadfields Estate Built-in Bookshelves
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Broadfields Estate starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Shelving that frames a window
- Shelves that sag under books

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, to suit the room. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.
What you get with us

- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Built-in bookshelves in Broadfields Estate: what you get
Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If you are living with shelving behind a desk for books and files and a bare wall above a doorway, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Broadfields Estate, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits built-in bookshelves along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned during the design visit.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

How we price built-in bookshelves
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- The width and height of the space
- Parking near your home
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What the furniture needs to hold
- The type of home and how the room is reached
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Living-room storage in Broadfields Estate
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Broadfields Estate were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and since 2000 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Barnet is no exception. If your street in Broadfields Estate is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking during the design visit. Interwar front rooms normally have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Broadfields Estate
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Broadfields Estate?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Broadfields Estate?
Yes. Broadfields Estate is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
How deep should bookshelves be?
It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
- Once you are happy, the shelving is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
