How we make built-in bookshelves for Ardleigh Green

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelves deep enough for large books and shelves that suit a period room, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Ardleigh Green, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for built-in bookshelves in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you’re happy, the shelving is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Preparing the room

Advice

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Cupboards below
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have
  • Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the finish.

If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. The cause is a job for the right trade.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Built-in living-room furniture in Ardleigh Green

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Ardleigh Green were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Ardleigh Green, Historic England’s list includes The Royal Liberty School (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Ardleigh Green joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

For an older house near All Saints, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If your children go to Ardleigh Green Junior School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Ardleigh Green?

Yes, we work across Havering, Ardleigh Green included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gidea Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that normally goes unused, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. We typically keep some shelves fixed for strength.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

What it is made from

Shelves

Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support so it stays straight under books. Shorter bays are another answer.

Birch plywood

How much a shelf bends depends on its span and what it carries. Birch plywood is stiff, which helps long shelves stay flat, and a front lip adds stiffness.
