Fitted wardrobes in Gallows Corner: what you get
Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. If you are living with a room too narrow for hinged doors and too little room for clothes, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Gallows Corner, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

How it’s made
Hanging rails
Long rails need support so they don’t bend under heavy coats when it carries winter coats. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.
Plinths and scribe strips
In period rooms, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It is what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.

Questions we’re often asked
I live near Gidea Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is Gallows Corner in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London, and Gallows Corner is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We talk through both at the measuring visit.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
What happens at the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you.
- We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Getting a quote
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

What affects the price in Gallows Corner
The price for your room depends on:
- The overall size of the piece
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Parking near your home
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you contact us
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

For a flat near Gidea Park station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near St Michael and All Angels Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Hare Hall, about 0.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Is bespoke worth it?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there’s normally a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Practical tips
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
Hang clothes evenly along each rail. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support.
Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use.
