Built-in bookshelves for homes in Grahame Park
Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. Most enquiries start with shelving that frames a window and space for art books and records; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Many homes around Grahame Park were built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. Built-in bookshelves can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with cable routes built in. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, which is fine for fitted furniture when the fixings are right.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Is Grahame Park in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes, Grahame Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
I live in a flat in Grahame Park. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Can shelves go around a radiator?
It’s possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.
Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?
Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that is often left bare.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What it costs
There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- The internal fittings
- The overall size of the piece
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Parking near your home
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, message us from the contact page.
What we need to know
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- How you want to use the space
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, and they can sag under a full load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often does not get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
