Built-in bookshelves for your home in Greenford

Living-room storage in Greenford

About 61% of the homes in the area around Greenford went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 15% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Greenford include Betham House (Grade II), less than half a mile south. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Greenford (about 61%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both.

The wider area includes historic houses like Northolt Manor, about 1 mile north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. For families living near Oldfield Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Living in a block of flats near Greenford station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Built-in bookshelves in Greenford

Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. If you are living with storage for children’s books and games and shelves deep enough for large books, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Greenford, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. Built-in bookshelves normally go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Questions from Greenford

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Greenford?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Is Greenford in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, Greenford is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Ealing and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. Long spans get a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip, a support or shorter bays, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.

How deep should bookshelves be?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, and a mix often works best. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. We measure the openings during the design visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You send us some details about the room and what the shelves will hold, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Shelf sag depends on span, depth and load. Birch plywood is stiff, which helps long shelves stay flat.

Shelves

Shelves can be fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add rigidity, while adjustable ones can follow your books.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How big the furniture is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.
