Built-in bookshelves in Northfields, Ealing

Planning built-in bookshelves for a home in Northfields? We start with a design visit and a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Books piled on the floor

Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Northfields?

Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A room lined with books feels different.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • A bare wall above a doorway

If you live near Lammas Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How we make built-in bookshelves for Northfields

Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. Most enquiries start with alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste and books with nowhere left to go, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Northfields, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Brentford station?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

My home in Northfields is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. We measure the openings during the design visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, so they can match the walls or stand out. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Where other trades come in

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Living-room storage in Northfields

In the streets around Northfields, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 19%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Northfields. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Around Northfields, about 63% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Ealing as a whole, about 28%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of built-in bookshelves.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Boston Manor, about 0.5 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Near listed buildings like Boston Manor House, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of Northfields, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
