Built-in bookshelves designed for your room
From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room

Ask for a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
Built-in bookshelves in Perivale: what you get
A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or the run is split into shorter bays. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong under heavy books. If you are living with low shelves children can reach and bowing shelves in an old bookcase, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Perivale, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you are renting or moving soon, a good standalone bookcase may be the better buy. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

Questions from Perivale
Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Perivale?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is Perivale in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes, we work across Ealing, Perivale included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
Can bookshelves go around a door?
Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that usually goes unused.
How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
We check how the wall is built at the measuring visit. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Living-room carpentry in Perivale: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Perivale, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 77%) and the years since 2000 (about 11%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Perivale include Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Perivale Underground Station (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 77% of homes in the area around Perivale date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both.
The wider area includes historic houses like Pitzhanger Manor, about 2 miles south. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Mary with St. Nicholas - Perivale, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If your children go to St John Fisher Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

What affects the price in Perivale
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The overall size of the piece
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Getting in touch
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
