Honest limits
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Northolt
Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If your home has bowing shelves in an old bookcase and bookshelves in keeping with an older house, built-in bookshelves made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Northolt, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Northolt?
Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall.
People usually get in touch with us about things like these:
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- Shelves that sag under books
- Low shelves children can reach
- A room lined with books
The wider area includes historic houses like Northolt Manor, about 0.3 miles south. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
How fitting day works
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
- You get a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How it’s made

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour at the design stage.
Shelves
Shelves can be fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing.
Questions we are often asked
Is Northolt in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. Northolt is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Ealing and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.
I live near Northolt Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?
Some or all of them can be adjustable. We normally keep some shelves fixed for strength, and the rest can be adjustable.
Should I send photos?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. Where a wall cannot take the load, we will say so and suggest another approach.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Living-room storage in Northolt
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Northolt were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 42%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The centre of Northolt is within about a quarter of a mile of the Northolt Village Green Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Northolt, let us know at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
For a family home near Willow Tree Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Living in a block of flats near Northolt Park station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What affects the price in Northolt
There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- The internal fittings
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking and unloading on your street
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
What to send when you get in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
