Southall Built-in Bookshelves
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Southall starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- Books with nowhere left to go
- Space for art books and records

How we make built-in bookshelves for Southall
Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It makes use of wall space that is usually left bare. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about low shelves children can reach and bare walls that could hold shelving.
A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around Southall, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Southall
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking and unloading on your street
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Helping us understand the room
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- How you want to use the space
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Making good walls that can’t take fixings
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
- Relocating radiators or pipework
Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Southall
Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Standard bookcases rarely suit them.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
- Shelves packed two rows deep
- Storage for children’s books and games
For an older house near Saint John, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- How parking will work on your street
Built-in living-room furniture in Southall
Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Southall, with about 32% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Southall include Liberty Cinema (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and Southall Manor House (Grade II*), under half a mile south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Southall, let us know during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If you live in a flat close to Southall station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Close to Minet Country Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Southall
I live near Southall station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is Southall in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes, we work across Ealing, Southall included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
- We come to measure and go through the design.
- We send a written quote.
- We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
- We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.
How to prepare
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Getting a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
