Built-in bookshelves in Acton
If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it is worth planning carefully. The heat needs somewhere to go, so we don’t box a radiator in without leaving space or an opening for it. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it or have a plumber move it first. If your home has bookcases that lean or wobble and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Some living rooms in London have tall ceilings and cornices, while others have low, plain ceilings. However your room in Acton is built, the height is measured as carefully as the width, since it sets how tall built-in bookshelves can be. Each section is sized to fit the route into the room.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

Living-room carpentry in Acton: local notes
About 43% of the homes in the streets around Acton went up before 1919, and about 28% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Acton Town Centre Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Acton. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Acton is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
For a family home near Derwentwater Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Near listed buildings like Gala Bingo Club, under half a mile south of the centre of Acton, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For a flat near Acton Central station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Acton
Is parking a problem for fitting in Acton?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Acton?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
Which boards do you build with?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. The materials are named in your written quote.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We don’t plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
Do you fit furniture for landlords?
Yes. It works the same way as any job: design visit, written quote, workshop, fitting. If the property is let, the agent can arrange access with the tenants.
How we price built-in bookshelves
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The internal fittings
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Caring for painted furniture
These points come up often when people plan built-in bookshelves. They help whatever the room:
- Let us know if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
- Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
- Let us know about access early
- Measure your tallest and deepest books
A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the paint.
Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves. Dry any spills quickly.
