  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and avoid heavy cleaning. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

It helps to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, so it helps to know this early.

Fitted cupboards in Ham: what you get

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away, while keeping them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. If your home has cupboards for a utility or boot room and storage in a corner nothing else fits, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Many homes around Ham date from the post-war decades. Post-war homes usually have squarer rooms and fewer nooks than period ones, so fitted cupboards often create the storage the house never had. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Ham

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Ham affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away and still leaves them reachable. Moving them isn’t our work; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have simple halls and stairs, which helps when the sections come in. Even so, the route is measured at the measuring visit. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Ham

Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They aren’t much to look at, yet they must stay easy to reach, and that shapes the design. Doors, panels and ventilation are planned around them.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

Living in a block of flats near Teddington station? Then fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What to check before you book

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Why bespoke in Ham?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. For tricky spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. Concrete and block walls can make it hard to fix ready-made furniture securely, whereas fitted pieces are designed with fixings that suit the wall. It matters most for tall cupboards and full shelves.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Richmond upon Thames is no exception. Depending on your street in Ham, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Ham Christian Centre, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. If you live near Sudbrook Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.
