Wall beds designed for your room

Wall beds in Hayes: what you get

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, though any new sockets are for your electrician. Typical reasons to get in touch are a living room with a bed that folds away and a storage wall with a bed inside, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Hayes, bedrooms are often straightforward shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hayes?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Is Hayes in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. Hayes is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hillingdon and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction

Follow the mechanism maker’s guidance each time you lower and lift the bed. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, and don’t let children play with it.

Think about the route into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.

Bedrooms in Hayes: local notes

About 50% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hayes went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hayes include Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Whitehall (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Hayes (about 50%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

Close to Barra Hall Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Northolt Manor, about 3 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

If you are just outside Hayes, we also cover Hillingdon (2 miles north-west), Yiewsley (2 miles west), West Drayton (2 miles west), Cowley (3 miles west) and Ruislip Gardens (3 miles north). Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are built in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Advice

Is it time for wall beds?

Lots of spare rooms have become home offices. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a wall bed makes that possible.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A studio that works by day and night
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed

For a flat near Hayes & Harlington station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What to check before you book

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Pricing wall beds in Hayes

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The internal fittings
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The width and height of the space

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
