Fitted wardrobes in Hayes: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hayes were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and since 2000 (about 19%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Hayes, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and Whitehall (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Hayes (about 50%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.
The wider area includes historic houses like Northolt Manor, about 3 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If you live near Barra Hall Park, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Hayes
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It’s useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. People normally come to us about a room too narrow for hinged doors and too little room for clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. Around Hayes, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Hayes
Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
- A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- Not enough hanging space
If you live in a flat close to Hayes & Harlington station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Before you choose who makes it
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hayes
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hayes?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Do you cover homes near Hayes & Harlington station?
Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.
What it costs
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.
What to send when you contact us
These details help when you get in touch:
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, use our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
Looking after your furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can normally be adjusted to line the doors up again.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
