Kensal Town Fitted Wardrobes

  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

Fitted wardrobes in Kensal Town

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns an tricky corner into storage. Most enquiries start with bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Kensal Town, plenty of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit fitted wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light as it goes on. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight wardrobe would leave in an older room.

Kensal Town homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Kensal Town were built before 1919 (about 54%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. 13 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Kensal Town. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 27% of households in the streets around Kensal Town live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Kensington Palace, about 1.6 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is one of the older houses near St Thomas Kensal Town, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Kensal Town is part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, about 2 miles south of Kensington. How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Kensal Town in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, we work across Kensington and Chelsea, Kensal Town included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.

My home in Kensal Town is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in Kensal Town?

It’s easiest to use our contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Kensal Town?

Sometimes it is a change in how a room is used. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

For a family home near St Thomas' CofE Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Empty the area where we’ll be working
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging

Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.

Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
