Loft storage in New Barnet
Loft storage in New Barnet
A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in New Barnet, we will look at what fits. We make eaves cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a dormer that isn’t being used and wasted space behind the knee walls.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around New Barnet, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

New Barnet homes and loft storage
In the area around New Barnet, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Barnet are set locally. If your street in New Barnet is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Barnet included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in New Barnet. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
Close to Victoria Recreation Ground? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. If your children go to St Mary's CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For a flat near New Barnet station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

FAQs: loft storage in New Barnet
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in New Barnet?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you make loft storage for homes in New Barnet?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and New Barnet is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do I choose the paint colour?
The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Can you convert my loft as well?
No. We don’t carry out loft conversions. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.
What we do not do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Approval for structural changes
- Electrical work in the loft
- Loft conversions, which we don’t carry out

What goes into it
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Sloped wardrobe tops
- Spray-painted finish
- Eaves doors and drawers
How we price loft storage
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The internal fittings
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Examples of the look you are after
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
If you only need a few boxes in a boarded loft, standalone shelving may be enough. A fitted design earns its place in a loft room you live in. We will give you an honest view during the design visit. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What it is made from
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall and ceiling. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth does the same job at the floor.
Doors and drawer fronts
We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. The angled fronts match the ceiling, so the gaps stay even all the way along.
What happens on fitting day
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch and tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
- We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and discuss the design.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- Your storage is built in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls.
Preparing the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
