Oakleigh Park Built-in Bookshelves

Thinking about built-in bookshelves in Oakleigh Park? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Shelving that frames a window

Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Built-in bookshelves in Oakleigh Park

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If you are living with books piled on the floor and room for a record collection, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Around Oakleigh Park, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you’re happy, the shelving is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Built-in bookshelves in Oakleigh Park: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Oakleigh Park, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Oakleigh Park. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Around a third of the homes in the area around Oakleigh Park (about 32%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

Living in a block of flats near Oakleigh Park station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For families living near Queenswell Infant & Nursery School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Oakleigh Park is in the London Borough of Barnet, about 2 miles south of Finchley. Wherever you are in Oakleigh Park, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Oakleigh Park is one of 41 places on our list for Barnet.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Practical tips

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Allow room for the collection to grow
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early

If you have adjustable shelves, move them when they’re empty.

Store the heaviest items low down.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish.

Shelves

Each shelf’s depth suits its job: shallow for paperbacks, deeper for art books and records.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Oakleigh Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Oakleigh Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

It is your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
