Fitted wardrobes for homes in North Harrow

In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around North Harrow, bedrooms are often simple shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It is a sensible choice against a colder external wall.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. It is easy to touch up later.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of North Harrow, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Alban (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and The Rayners Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 54% of homes in the area around North Harrow date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

For a family home near Longfield Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Close to Headstone Manor Recreation Ground? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Living in a block of flats near Harrow-on-the-Hill station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Arranging a design visit

Advice

Pricing fitted wardrobes in North Harrow

Several things affect the price:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in North Harrow

Does a conservation area in or near North Harrow affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is North Harrow in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, we work across Harrow, North Harrow included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it, which helps avoid condensation.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
