Bespoke kitchens in North Harrow, Harrow

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in North Harrow starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

Bespoke kitchens in North Harrow

Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners are not square and floors slope, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the worktop you choose can sit level. Most enquiries start with a kitchen for a room that isn’t square and room for everything in the kitchen, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around North Harrow, kitchens often have a back door to the garden and a window over the sink. Cabinets, a larder and a dresser can be made to suit the layout. Your chosen worktop, sink and appliances are fitted into the design, with plumbing and electrics left to your plumber and electrician.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in North Harrow?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Harrow-on-the-Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can you fit cabinets to walls that are not straight?

Yes. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled, so the worktop you choose can sit level. That’s a big part of why bespoke suits period homes.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and storage. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Starting with a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Open shelves in a kitchen need to stay straight, unless they’re built strong.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives a smooth surface for painted doors, and the moisture-resistant grade suits a kitchen.

Bespoke kitchens in North Harrow: local notes

In the area around North Harrow, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 54%) and before 1919 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. North Harrow is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The council can confirm if you are not sure. About 54% of homes in the streets around North Harrow date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many houses of that era have had the kitchen extended or knocked through, so the kitchen is designed for the room as it is now.

If you live near Headstone Manor Recreation Ground, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Alban, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Building work, like removing walls
  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

Some want a kitchen that suits a period house. Painted cabinets, a dresser or a larder can sit well with original features and look as if they belong.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A layout for a small or tricky room

If your children go to Longfield Primary School or a school nearby, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
