TV and media units for homes in North Harrow

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about clutter around the TV and nowhere good for speakers.

A house from between the wars normally has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around North Harrow, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

What we don’t do

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on. Bespoke units are made for one wall and the things you use. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

TV and media units for homes in North Harrow

In the area around North Harrow, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 54%) and before 1919 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. North Harrow is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Alban, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Harrow-on-the-Hill station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Check where the seating will go

A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted surfaces need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.

Do not let clutter build up against the unit’s vents when you add equipment.

Is it time for TV and media units?

Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand no longer suits it, or the screen takes over the room. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Standard units leaving gaps

For a family home near Longfield Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

What to check before you book

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Common questions about TV and media units

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in North Harrow?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in North Harrow?

Yes, North Harrow is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Harrow and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

That’s the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later without taking the unit apart. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
