Wall Beds in North Wembley

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on wall beds in North Wembley starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • A bed that fills a little-used room

Wall beds in North Wembley: what you get

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that is sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a flexible room for a growing family and shelves or a desk around the bed.

A good part of the housing around North Wembley is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

On an external wall, moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice, with ventilation allowed for.

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the softer look of a hand-painted finish in a period room.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place day after day. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Bedrooms in North Wembley: local notes

About 39% of the homes in the neighbourhood around North Wembley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of North Wembley include Church of St John (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Wembley Fire Station (Grade II), under half a mile south. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around North Wembley (about 39%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

Northolt Manor, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For a flat near Wembley Central station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Park Lane Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Your questions about wall beds in North Wembley

Is North Wembley in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, North Wembley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Brent and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in North Wembley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We’ll explain its limits at the design visit, so you can pick the right one.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall is useful. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it at the measuring visit.

What wall beds can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Supplying mattresses
  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting works for wall beds

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First, you tell us about the space.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

How to prepare

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Ask for a quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

How we price wall beds

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How square the room is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
