Fitted home offices in Norwood New Town: what you get
A good home office has a place for everything. We can plan drawers, file storage, a cupboard for the printer and shelving, so the work surface stays clear. Doors can hide the working things when you’re done. We design the storage around your work, wherever you are in Norwood New Town. If you are living with a desk in the wrong light and a room with two jobs to do, that is what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Whether your home in Norwood New Town is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, home offices work best when the desk, shelving and storage are planned together. We plan cable routes too, leaving new wiring to your electrician. Shelf spans and thicknesses are chosen so books don’t bow them.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Fitted home offices for homes in Norwood New Town
Homes built before 1919 make up about 30% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Norwood New Town, with about 22% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. There are 14 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Norwood New Town. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Croydon has its own. Depending on your street in Norwood New Town, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.
Kingswood House, about 0.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. If your home is one of the older houses near New Covenant Church-Equipping People, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- The internal fittings
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Getting in touch
A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Your questions about fitted home offices in Norwood New Town
Is parking a problem for fitting in Norwood New Town?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you cover homes near Gipsy Hill station?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What are your built-in desks made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Do you wire in sockets for the home office?
New sockets need an electrician. The furniture is designed to suit, with routes for chargers and screens. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Is it time for fitted home offices?
What’s behind you on a call is worth thinking about. Built-in shelves and doors give a tidy backdrop. It is a small detail that many people appreciate.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Wires with no tidy route
- No way to put work away
- A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
- Working at the kitchen table
For a flat near Gipsy Hill station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- How doors and drawers are fitted
Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Notice where daylight falls at different times
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
- List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
Heavy files are best kept low or close to the supports. It helps shelves stay straight. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.
Don’t overload shelves beyond what they were designed for. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Keep the weight spread along the shelf.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. With a bespoke desk, cable routes are part of the design. It keeps things neat above and below the desk. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have at least one. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

How fitting works for fitted home offices
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
- We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets. Cable routes are planned at this point.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- The office is made at our workshop and painted in your colour.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
