Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan under-stairs storage. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Tell us if the hall is being decorated
  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall

Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it is best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. If anything isn’t right, use our contact form and we will talk it through.

Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

Under-stairs storage in Paddington: what you get

Every staircase has its own shape. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. It’s the part of the job a boxed unit simply cannot manage. If you are living with a dark, wasted space under the stairs and a low corner too deep to reach into, under-stairs cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Paddington are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that isn’t. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You let us know about the space under the stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
  3. We send a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Preparing the room

Under-stairs storage in Paddington: local notes

About 47% of the homes in the streets around Paddington went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 283 entries within half a mile of the centre of Paddington. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 47% of homes in the neighbourhood around Paddington were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Under the stairs in an older terrace is often where the meters or the fuse board are, so the design keeps them accessible.

Living in a block of flats near London Paddington station? Then under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Royal Parks of London, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Near listed buildings like Catholic Apostolic Church and Church House, about 0.5 miles north-west of the centre of Paddington, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Flats, leases and landlords

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Can you fit under-stairs storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Paddington?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

I live in a flat in Paddington. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

How long will you be in my home?

It depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The design visit gives us what we need to plan it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

How do I get a quote for under-stairs storage in Paddington?

The first step is to drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
