Built-in bookshelves in Upper Edmonton
Built-in bookshelves in Upper Edmonton: what you get
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bookshelves in keeping with an older house and shelves that sag under books.
Ceiling heights across London vary a lot, from tall period rooms to compact modern ones. In Upper Edmonton, as anywhere, we measure the height as carefully as the width, because it decides how tall built-in bookshelves can go. Each section is sized to fit the route into the room.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How we price built-in bookshelves
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Parking near your home
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
What we need to know
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Any ideas or images you have saved
To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
- We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.
Preparing the room
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
How to get a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Tips worth knowing
Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
- Estimate how many metres of books you have
- Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
- Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
Load the shelves gradually and evenly. Put the heaviest books on lower shelves and near uprights.
If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade.
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Upper Edmonton
I live near Silver Street station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Upper Edmonton?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?
We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Tell us about heavy collections at the measuring visit.
