Need walk-in wardrobes in Purley?

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Purley

I live near Purley station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Purley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Walk-in wardrobes in Purley: what you get

Most designs start with the hanging. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. People usually come to us about somewhere to sit and get ready and a side each for a couple; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. A big part of the housing around Purley is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

How to get a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Is bespoke worth it?

A basic rail system is easy to change, which suits some people well. Bespoke joinery lets you mix doors, drawers, shelves and hanging, painted to match the room. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Boards, parts and paint

Hanging rails

Full-length hanging suits coats and long garments, and the rest can be double hung.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, in any colour you choose.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Purley homes and walk-in wardrobes

In the neighbourhood around Purley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%) and the years since 2000 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Purley (about 31%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 62% of households in the streets around Purley live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Swithun's, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If you live near Dollypers Hill, walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For a flat near Purley station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
