Built-in bookshelves for homes in South Croydon

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around South Croydon were built before 1919 (about 52%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of South Croydon, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Augustine (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Croham Hurst House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Croydon sets its own rules. If your street in South Croydon is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 2.4 miles east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Sanderstead station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Purley Oaks Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Built-in bookshelves in South Croydon

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including South Croydon. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are shelves deep enough for large books and shelves that suit a period room.

Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and they set the lines that built-in bookshelves have to meet. A large share of the housing around South Croydon went up before 1919, so those details are worth looking at closely during the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bespoke shelving takes longer than buying from a shop: there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are renting or moving soon, a good standalone bookcase may be the better buy. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Advice

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in South Croydon

Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in South Croydon?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Croydon?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

How do you stop shelves from sagging?

We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support. Tell us about heavy collections during the design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that usually goes unused, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in South Croydon

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How square the room is
  • How big the furniture is

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Examples of the look you are after

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit

Fill the shelves evenly rather than all at once. Keep the heaviest books low and close to the supports.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.
