Built-in bookshelves in Seven Kings
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. If you’re thinking about built-in bookshelves in Seven Kings, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are shelves deep enough for large books and a room lined with books.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and they set the lines that built-in bookshelves have to meet. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Seven Kings, so those details are worth looking at closely during the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Seven Kings
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Seven Kings?
Yes. Seven Kings is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Redbridge and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Seven Kings?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. If a wall is not suitable, we will tell you.
How do you stop shelves from sagging?
Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, often in birch plywood. Tell us about heavy collections at the measuring visit.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that is often left bare and can frame a window seat.
How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- You let us know about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
- A quote in writing follows. Read it through and ask us anything.
- We then make the bookcase in our workshop, with shelves thick enough for their span.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.
Before we arrive
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Starting with a design visit
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bespoke shelving takes longer than buying from a shop: there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
Cupboard doors in MDF stay flat and paint well. There is no grain to show through the paint.
Shelves
Depth is set around what you keep, from shallow paperback shelves to deeper ones for records.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Estimate how many metres of books you have
- Mention any radiator on the wall
- Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
- Let us know where the heaviest things will go
Make a note of the paint colour used so any touch-ups match. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.
Store the heaviest items low down, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.
