When you need someone else

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Built-in bookshelves in Newbury Park

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about bookcases that lean or wobble and books piled on the floor.

Lots of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, which matters around Newbury Park, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Newbury Park homes and built-in bookshelves

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 52% of the housing in the streets around Newbury Park, with about 16% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Newbury Park, Historic England’s list includes Aldborough Hatch Chapel (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than half of the homes in the streets around Newbury Park (about 52%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both.

For a family home near Newbury Park Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. For a flat near Seven Kings station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Related advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand, to suit the room. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Questions we are often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Newbury Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Newbury Park?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Newbury Park is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. We typically keep some shelves fixed for strength, with adjustable ones in between.

How deep should bookshelves be?

The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Newbury Park

Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them.

Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:

  • Space for art books and records
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 0.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
