How we make built-in bookshelves for Monkhams

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Redbridge and the rest of London. Most enquiries start with a bare wall above a doorway and empty alcoves that could hold books; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Monkhams, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, built-in bookshelves can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Why bespoke in Monkhams?

Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, and they can sag under a full load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Monkhams

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 33% of the housing in the area around Monkhams, with about 31% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Monkhams, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Monkhams is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Close to The Highams Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For an older house near All Saints' Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Highams Park station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Monkhams is about 1 mile south of Woodford, part of the London Borough of Redbridge. From period terraces to newer flats in Monkhams, we measure the room as it is and design around it. We list Monkhams among 18 places we cover in Redbridge.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Let us know where the heaviest things will go
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the finish.

If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. The cause is a job for the right trade, and it’s easier to deal with before it spreads.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Because the bookcase is sprayed before fitting, it arrives finished. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.

Shelves

Depth is set around what you keep, from shallow paperback shelves to deeper ones for records.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Monkhams?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Highams Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

We check how the wall is built at the design visit. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.
