Built-in bookshelves in Cranbrook: what you get

A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. If you are thinking about built-in bookshelves in Cranbrook, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a bare wall above a doorway and a room lined with books.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and a large share of the homes around Cranbrook date from then. That gives full-height built-in bookshelves room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up later.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly, which suits shelving with lots of edges. The colour is agreed before we start.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Advice

What affects the price in Cranbrook

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • The internal fittings
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking near your home

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you’re after

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Cranbrook

Is Cranbrook in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. Cranbrook is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Redbridge and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Cranbrook?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route not just the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid.

Living-room carpentry in Cranbrook: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Cranbrook, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 9 entries within half a mile of the centre of Cranbrook. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Around Cranbrook, about 66% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Redbridge as a whole, about 27%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

If you live in a period home close to St Clement's Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. For a family home near The Ursuline Academy Ilford, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Cranbrook

Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • A home library or study
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble

If you live near Valentines Park, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
