Built-in bookshelves in Gants Hill

About our built-in bookshelves in Gants Hill

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so we do not box a radiator in without leaving space or an opening for it. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether, or ask their plumber about moving it. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are low shelves children can reach and shelves that suit a period room.

A house from between the wars normally has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Gants Hill, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Living-room storage in Gants Hill

About 53% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Gants Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Gants Hill, Historic England’s list includes Valentines Mansion (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west, and Gardener's Cottage (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 53% of homes in the area around Gants Hill date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar front rooms normally have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both.

For a family home near Gearies Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. For a flat near Ilford station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Close to Valentines Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Questions from Gants Hill

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Gants Hill?

Yes, we work across Redbridge, Gants Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Gants Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, and a mix often works best. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. If a wall isn’t suitable, we will tell you.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf bookcases are cheaper and quick to buy. You can take them to your next home. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house, which is the trade-off. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Tell us about parking and access at the design visit

Take the books off before moving an adjustable shelf.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
  4. The sections are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.
