Why bespoke in South Bank?

Bespoke is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you are only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, so storage is lost at the top. Built-in pieces use the full height.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

About our built-in bookshelves in South Bank

Shelving can frame a door or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about bowing shelves in an old bookcase and books with nowhere left to go.

In a mansion block flat, ceilings are often tall and the walls are rarely straight, while a flat in a newer block is more likely to have plasterboard partitions. Most households around South Bank live in purpose-built flats, old or new, so we check what each wall is made of before planning built-in bookshelves. Tall pieces are fixed back securely, whichever wall it is.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Questions from South Bank

Does a conservation area in or near South Bank affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in South Bank?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Built-in bookshelves are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It’s a sensible choice against an external wall.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase that fixes securely to the wall.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so it’s worth checking with the managing agent in advance. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. A written quote follows. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you’re happy, the shelving is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Living-room carpentry in South Bank: local notes

In the neighbourhood around South Bank, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and the years since 2000 (about 32%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. South Bank is partly covered by the South Bank Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near St John's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. For a family home near Oasis Academy Johanna, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. For a flat near London Waterloo station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Let us know about access early
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records

Take the books off before moving an adjustable shelf and make sure each support is pushed fully home.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. The cause is a job for the right trade.
