How we make built-in bookshelves for Stockwell
Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. If your home has room for a record collection and shelving that frames a window, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Mansion block flats tend to have tall ceilings and walls that wander, while a flat in a newer block is more likely to have plasterboard partitions. Most households around Stockwell live in purpose-built flats, old or new, so the wall type is the first thing we check for built-in bookshelves. Tall pieces are fixed back securely, whichever wall it is.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
For carcasses and fixed shelves, birch plywood gives a rigid frame, and birch plywood grips its fixings well.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
What happens on fitting day
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.
- You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
- We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
- We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.
How to prepare
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
Built-in living-room furniture in Stockwell
In the streets around Stockwell, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. 24 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Stockwell. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. So a van fitting furniture in Stockwell normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.
The wider area includes historic houses like Carlyle's House, about 2.4 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Close to Max Roach Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. For an older house near St. Andrew's, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Questions from Stockwell
I live in a flat in Stockwell. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Built-in bookshelves are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Stockwell?
Yes, Stockwell is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lambeth and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?
It needs planning. We leave space so heat is not trapped. If you’d rather move it, that is for a plumber.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Before and after fitting day
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
- Measure your tallest and deepest books
- Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
- Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
Make a note of the paint colour used. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.
If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade.
When you need someone else
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Knocking through or altering walls
