How we make built-in bookshelves for Streatham
In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves deep enough for large books and a home library or study.
Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and around Streatham, a large share of homes are that age. Full-height built-in bookshelves can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
- Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Relocating radiators or pipework
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Streatham
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Streatham?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Streatham station?
Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
How do you stop shelves from sagging?
We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. Long spans get a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip, a support or shorter bays, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall into sound structure. If a wall is not suitable, we will tell you.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces that take a painted finish evenly. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Shelves
For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support so it stays straight under books. Shorter bays are another answer.
Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

Related advice
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and against an uneven wall the gaps are obvious. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Built-in bookshelves in Streatham: local notes
In the area around Streatham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Streatham is within about a quarter of a mile of the Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Around Streatham, about 55% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Lambeth as a whole, about 40%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of built-in bookshelves.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Roman Catholic Church of the English Martyrs, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For an older house near St Leonard's Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Streatham station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
