Bedrooms in South Bank: local notes
In the area around South Bank, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and the years since 2000 (about 32%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 243 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of South Bank. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. So a van fitting furniture in South Bank normally needs a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.
Close to Jubilee Gardens? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Near listed buildings like Royal Festival Hall, under half a mile north of the centre of South Bank, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to London Waterloo station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
South Bank is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, about 3 miles south of Stockwell. How we make wall beds for South Bank
You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, so we plan the layout with that in mind. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. People normally come to us about shelves or a desk around the bed and room for a desk and a guest bed, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Spare rooms in flats typically have more than one job, and closed storage lets the room change role without clutter. Purpose-built flats are home to most households around South Bank. We plan the space in front so every door and drawer opens fully.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?
A bespoke wall bed takes more planning than buying a unit online. What you get is one design that suits the room and the way you use it. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, which wastes the space above. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Questions from South Bank
How do you fit wall beds in a flat in South Bank?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Bank?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?
It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Honest limits
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

Fitting day, step by step
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the measuring visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.

Advice
How we price wall beds
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The number of doors and drawers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.
What to send when you get in touch
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
