Living-room storage in North Brixton
Homes built before 1919 make up about 28% of the housing in the neighbourhood around North Brixton, with about 26% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of North Brixton, 20 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. That usually means a van in North Brixton needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know about parking near your home at the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses like Buckingham Palace, about 2.3 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a family home near Van Gogh Academy, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

About our built-in bookshelves in North Brixton
Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or ask their plumber about moving it. If your home has room for a record collection and a room lined with books, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In a flat, one room often does the work of a living room, dining room and study. Most households around North Brixton live in purpose-built flats, so built-in bookshelves that make use of the wall height are worth considering. Shallow units on one wall can hold more than a standalone bookcase while using less space.

How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.
- You contact us with some details about the wall and your books.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Working from home is another reason. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Storage for children’s books and games
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
If you live in a flat close to Loughborough Junction station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Choosing a carpenter
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- A quote in writing that sets out the job

Is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke is not instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, which wastes the space above. Built-in pieces use the full height.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in North Brixton
Do you cover homes near Loughborough Junction station?
Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is North Brixton in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. North Brixton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
The depth is set around your books. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above.
How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
