Southborough Built-in Bookshelves

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Southborough starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Shelving that frames a window

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Southborough

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. For a home in Southborough, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves that suit a period room and shelving behind a desk for books and files.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Southborough, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Southborough

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Southborough?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live near Bickley station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type into sound structure. If a wall isn’t suitable, we will tell you.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Built-in bookshelves in Southborough: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 35% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Southborough, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Southborough include Turpington Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and The Chequers Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Southborough joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live in a period home close to St Augustine's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. The wider area includes historic houses such as Bromley Palace, about 1.4 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Starting with a design visit

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Southborough

Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. A bowing shelf is normally too thin or too long for what it carries. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • A home library or study

If your children go to Southborough Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
