Built-in bookshelves for your home in Crofton
Built-in bookshelves in Crofton: local notes
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 57% of the housing in the streets around Crofton, with about 31% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Crofton. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 75% of households in the area around Crofton, according to Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
If your children go to Crofton Infant School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Built-in bookshelves in Crofton
Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. A mix often works best. People typically come to us about wasted wall space around a door or window and storage for children’s books and games; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A good part of the housing around Crofton is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, and that layout shapes where built-in bookshelves work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What else we make in Crofton
What affects the price in Crofton
The price for your room depends on:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The overall size of the piece
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
Before the design visit
What helps most when you first contact us:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Examples of the look you are after
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Crofton?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Crofton?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Crofton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.
How do you stop shelves from sagging?
We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support. Let us know about heavy collections during the design visit.
Can bookshelves go around a door?
Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It makes good use of wall space that typically goes unused and can frame a window seat.
Honest limits
It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
- Knocking through or altering walls
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator

Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
- We come to measure and talk through the design.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.
Before we arrive
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, message us from the contact page.
Advice
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
