Built-in bookshelves in Penge: what you get

A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. If you’re thinking about built-in bookshelves in Penge, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. If your home has bowing shelves in an old bookcase and low shelves children can reach, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Penge built before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for built-in bookshelves is chosen. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it, particularly behind loaded shelves.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Built-in bookshelves in Penge: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Penge, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Crystal Palace Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Penge. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Around Penge, about 47% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 17%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of built-in bookshelves.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Evangelist, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If your children go to Harris Primary Academy Crystal Palace or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Is bespoke worth it?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, and they can sag under a full load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What you get with us

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on shelves and uprights.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. It has no grain to show through.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, use our contact form.

Advice

Questions we are often asked

I live near Penge West station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in Penge?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that usually goes unused.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, and the rest can be adjustable.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. A bowing shelf is typically too thin or too long for what it carries. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Space for art books and records

If you live in a flat close to Penge West station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
