Questions we’re often asked

I live near Petts Wood station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Petts Wood?

Yes. Petts Wood is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Petts Wood?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Petts Wood

We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Petts Wood. If your home has space for art books and records and low shelves children can reach, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Petts Wood, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

What affects the price in Petts Wood

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges. The colour is agreed before we start.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later, and it suits a traditional room.
