Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. They also come with you when you move. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Built-in bookshelves in West Twyford

A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or we divide the run with uprights. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong under heavy books. If your home has bookshelves in keeping with an older house and shelves packed two rows deep, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around West Twyford, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks on it are simple to touch up, and it suits a traditional room.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for uprights, panels and faces. It’s a sensible choice against an external wall.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in West Twyford

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Living-room storage in West Twyford

About 49% of the homes in the area around West Twyford went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Twyford include Church of St Mary (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Park Royal London Regional Transport Station (Grade II), under half a mile south. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are home to about 46% of households in the area around West Twyford, based on Census 2021. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

For families living near West Twyford Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. The wider area includes historic houses like Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.8 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If you live near St. Raphael's Edible Garden, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, including roughly how many books there are.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in West Twyford

Does a conservation area in or near West Twyford affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near Stonebridge Park station?

Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. We measure the openings during the design visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. Long spans get a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip, a support or shorter bays, often in birch plywood. Let us know about heavy collections during the design visit.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.
