Built-in bookshelves for your home in Mile End
How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.
- You contact us with some details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.
How to prepare
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Arranging a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
Built-in bookshelves in Mile End: what you get
Shelving can frame a door or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It makes use of wall space that is usually left bare. If your home has low shelves children can reach and room for a record collection, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
A large share of the homes around Mile End date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes seldom have fitted storage in the living room. Built-in bookshelves can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with routes for cables designed in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bespoke is not instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Big standalone units can dominate a compact room, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Why choose us
- Saturdays by prior arrangement
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- Work across the whole of London

Built-in bookshelves in Mile End: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 45% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Mile End, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Mile End, 22 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
Near listed buildings like Phoenix School, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Mile End, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Limehouse station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Mile End Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
Mile End is within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 2 miles west of Whitechapel. We design and make built-in bookshelves for homes in Mile End, as part of our work in every London borough. Mile End is one of 31 places on our list for Tower Hamlets.
We work across E3, E1 and E14. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Bow Road, Bale Road and Toby Lane, along with the roads around them, for built-in bookshelves and any of our other fitted furniture. Mile End is near the A1205; on busy main roads, unloading built-in bookshelves takes a little planning. If you’re just outside Mile End, we also cover Bow (1 mile north), Bow Common (1 mile south-east), Bromley (1 mile east), Limehouse (1 mile south) and Donnybrook Quarter (1 mile north). We also make built-in bookshelves in nearby places such as Whitechapel (2 miles west), Spitalfields (2 miles west), Tower Hill (2 miles south-west), St George in the East (2 miles south-west), Wapping (2 miles south-west) and Isle of Dogs (3 miles south).

Questions from Mile End
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Mile End?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Does a conservation area in or near Mile End affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
What happens if there is a radiator where I want shelves?
It needs planning. We leave space so heat is not trapped. If you’d rather move it, that’s for a plumber, and is best done before we fit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Will built-in bookshelves sag?
Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.
How do I get started?
Simply message us from the contact page. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design.
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for uprights, panels and faces. It is a sensible choice against an external wall.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour at the design stage.

What it costs
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
