Built-in bookshelves in St George in the East: what you get

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bookcases that lean or wobble and space for art books and records.

Many homes around St George in the East were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats in newer developments. In a compact new-build room, a shallower run of built-in bookshelves can add storage without crowding the space. Boxing for pipes and risers is common in newer homes, and the furniture can be designed around it.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Shadwell station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St George in the East?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them straight away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, and that’s worth weighing up. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often doesn’t get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in St George in the East

For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels, and can include a desk or a window seat.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • A home library or study
  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house

Near listed buildings like Church of St George in the East, under half a mile north-east of the centre of St George in the East, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in the room’s own light. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. There is no grain to show through the paint.
