Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Upton

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Upton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Is Upton in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. Upton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Newham and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Upton?

It is easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. Fixings are chosen for the wall type into sound structure. Where a wall can’t take the load, we will say so.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. Many people choose both.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Upton

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. If your home has shelves that suit a period room and bowing shelves in an old bookcase, built-in bookshelves made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

In a house from the Victorian or Edwardian years, the front room normally keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. Around Upton, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that’s a common starting point. The recesses either side take built-in bookshelves scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and against an uneven wall the gaps are obvious. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the wall and your books, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Ask your electrician about sockets early
  • Let us know about access early
  • Allow room for the collection to grow
  • Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books

Fill the shelves evenly rather than all at once. Keep the heaviest books low and close to the supports.

Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves to avoid water marks. Dry any spills quickly.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Built-in bookshelves in Upton: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 67% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Upton, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Upton, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Antony and Monastery, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Forest Gate station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Valentines Mansion, about 2.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
