Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Making good walls that cannot take fixings
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Decorating the rest of the room

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. People typically come to us about shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and a home library or study, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Windows, doors, radiators and sockets decide where furniture can and cannot go. Whatever kind of home you have in Plaistow, built-in bookshelves are planned around those first. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Questions we are often asked

I live near West Ham station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Plaistow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought bookcases typically come in one depth. Bespoke shelving can mix depths to suit what you own. Gaps behind, beside and above ready-made furniture collect dust, while fitted pieces are scribed tight to the walls and ceiling, which makes cleaning simpler.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Let us know about access early
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.

Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Trapped heat is not good for the room or the books.

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

Living-room storage in Plaistow

About 40% of the homes in the streets around Plaistow went up before 1919, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 14 entries within half a mile of the centre of Plaistow. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Newham is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Plaistow fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to West Ham station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Near listed buildings like St Andrew's Vicarage, less than half a mile east of the centre of Plaistow, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near Memorial Community Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the measuring visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
