Built-in bookshelves in Plashet, Newham

In Plashet, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. Your built-in bookcase is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

Built-in bookshelves in Plashet

About our built-in bookshelves in Plashet

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and bookshelves in keeping with an older house.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and around Plashet, a large share of homes are that age. That gives full-height built-in bookshelves room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Built-in living-room furniture in Plashet

About 71% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Plashet went up before 1919, and about 13% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Plashet include Passmore Edwards Library (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and East Ham Underground Station (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 42% of households in the area around Plashet live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, and built-in bookshelves are made to those widths.

For an older house near Church of St Barnabas, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. For a family home near Plashet School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and on a wall that is not straight the gaps show. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What you get with us

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What happens on fitting day

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Is parking a problem for fitting in Plashet?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Plashet?

Yes, we work across Newham, Plashet included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How deep should bookshelves be?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, so many people mix depths. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Plashet?

Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Low shelves children can reach

If you live near West Ham Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
