Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Canning Town

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you choose. We work across London, including Canning Town. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are space for art books and records and bookcases that lean or wobble.

Many homes around Canning Town were built since 2000, and newer homes seldom have fitted storage in the living room. We plan built-in bookshelves around the existing sockets and aerial points, with routes for cables designed in. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, which is fine for fitted furniture when the fixings are right.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Canning Town

Homes built since 2000 make up about 38% of the housing in the streets around Canning Town, with about 24% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Canning Town include Warehouse K (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Warehouse W (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the area around Canning Town (about 38%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes normally have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so built-in bookshelves are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.7 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If your children go to Rosetta Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near Keir Hardie Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Plumbing work around the shelves

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so tell us what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us with some details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Arranging a design visit

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Canning Town?

Yes, we work across Newham, Canning Town included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in Canning Town?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Why bespoke in Canning Town?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, and they can sag under a full load. We size each shelf for its span and load, with birch plywood, a stiffening lip or a support where needed. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often does not get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.
