Fitted home offices for your home in Upton

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

If you only need a simple desk against a straight wall, an off-the-shelf desk may be enough. A fitted office earns its place where the space is awkward or the storage matters. We will give you an honest view at the design visit. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How we make fitted home offices for Upton

Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. In Upton, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People normally come to us about paperwork and files with nowhere to go and an alcove or landing that could take a desk; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A desk has to be level even when the floor isn’t, so desks in older homes are levelled on site. A large share of the homes around Upton were built before 1919, so levelling is part of the plan from the first visit. Shelves above are scribed to the wall so the gaps stay even.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the home office designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking near your home
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The number of doors and drawers

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

Built-in desks and shelving in Upton

In the streets around Upton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Upton. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If you live in a flat close to Forest Gate station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. Near listed buildings like Church of St Antony and Monastery, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Upton, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Upton is part of the London Borough of Newham, about 1 mile south of Plaistow. Whether your home in Upton is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Upton is one of the places in Newham where we make fitted home offices, and the borough has 26 places on our list.

We cover every part of E7, E13 and E15 for fitted home offices. Across the rest of Newham, our area takes in Canning Town (2 miles south), East Village (2 miles west), Wallend (2 miles east), Three Mills (2 miles south-west), Mill Meads (2 miles south-west) and Custom House (2 miles south).

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. It is applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the desk, the carcasses and the drawers, and its edge can be left visible or painted.

Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the work you do and the equipment you use.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The office furniture is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
  5. The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Common questions about fitted home offices

My home in Upton is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Upton?

Yes, we work across Newham, Upton included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

How long will the home office fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as possible while we work.
