Built-in bookshelves for your home in Wallend
Flats, conversions and lettings
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Built-in bookshelves in Wallend: what you get
Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. If you are thinking about built-in bookshelves in Wallend, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are books piled on the floor and a home library or study.
In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, living rooms vary a lot in shape. You might have alcoves, a bay, a wide open-plan room or a compact one. Built-in bookshelves are designed for the room in Wallend that you have, with shelves sized so they don’t sag.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Living-room storage in Wallend
Homes built before 1919 make up about 34% of the housing in the streets around Wallend, with about 34% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Wallend, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. About 33% of households in the streets around Wallend live in terraced houses, the 2021 Census shows. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, and built-in bookshelves are made to those widths.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Eastbury Manor House, about 1.5 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. For an older house near St John the Baptist's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Wallend is about 2 miles west of Plaistow, within the London Borough of Newham. Wallend is part of the area we cover. Wallend is one of the places in Newham where we make built-in bookshelves, and the borough has 26 places on our list.
We make built-in bookshelves across E6, IG11 and E12 for built-in bookshelves. Streets in the area include Hall Road, Quay Road and Ascot Road, and we cover homes on all of them for built-in bookshelves. Wallend sits close to the A117, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. We also cover the places around Wallend: East Ham (1 mile south-west), Plashet (1 mile north-west), Upton Park (1 mile west), Manor Park (1 mile north) and Beckton (1 mile south). We also make built-in bookshelves in nearby places like Plaistow (2 miles west), Stratford (3 miles west), Canning Town (2 miles south-west), Forest Gate (2 miles north-west), Greengate (2 miles west) and Maryland (3 miles west).
Around Wallend
We fit furniture in homes around Dukes Head Public House, Tyndale Academy and Langdon School. For rail, the closest station is Barking station, about 0.9 miles north-east of the centre. A little further out are Newham University Hospital (1.4 miles south-west) and The Who Shop Museum (less than half a mile west).
How we price built-in bookshelves
There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The overall size of the piece
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Spray painting or hand painting
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Where you live, with the postcode
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Barking station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Wallend?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The fitting depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The bookcase is made in our workshop first.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall into sound structure. Where a wall cannot take the load, we will say so and suggest another approach.
Can shelves go around a radiator?
We plan around it with care. We leave space so heat isn’t trapped. If you’d rather move it, that is for a plumber, and is best done before we fit.
From workshop to your room
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
Before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Let us know about parking near your home
Getting a quote
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Wallend
Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them.
Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
- Books with nowhere left to go
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
If your children go to Nelson Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
