Wembley Park Built-in Bookshelves

In Wembley Park, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. We design your built-in bookcase at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

My home in Wembley Park is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Wembley Park?

Yes, we work across Brent, Wembley Park included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Wembley Park

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether, or ask their plumber about moving it. People typically come to us about space for art books and records and storage for children’s books and games, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a home built since 2000, the aerial point and sockets are typically already fixed in place. Many homes around Wembley Park are from those years, so built-in bookshelves are normally designed around what’s already there. If you want an extra socket, that’s for your electrician.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits bookshelves in an older house. You choose the colour.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Built-in living-room furniture in Wembley Park

About 57% of the homes in the area around Wembley Park went up since 2000, and about 29% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wembley Park include Brent Town Hall (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Wembley Hill Lodge (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than half of the homes in the area around Wembley Park (about 57%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes usually have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so the fixings go into the studs, or heavier pieces stand on the floor.

For families living near Michaela Community School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live near St. Raphael's Edible Garden, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For a flat near Wembley Stadium station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Helping us understand the room

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • How you want to use the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, so they can match the walls or stand out. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. It is then assembled and fixed in the room.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You send us some details about the room and what the shelves will hold, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
